Workshop on Establishing Values and Guiding Principles
Your invitation to our next live webinar on Tuesday 2nd July
We are delighted to invite you to our workshop on Establishing Values and Guiding Principles for start-up schools and learning communities, on Tuesday 2nd July at 7.30pm BST.
Come and meet Maz Wilberforce and Tomlin Wilding, who run Hawthorn Learning and are launching the Hawthorn Small School, a new alternative to mainstream schooling which they hope will open in September 2025.
Their mission for the Hawthorn Small School is to be a sustainable community for progressive, autonomous, human-scale education that nurtures and develops students, co-creating personalised learning that inspires a life of wonder and success. They say:
“Every part of Hawthorn Learning and Hawthorn Small School is considered and purposeful. We live our values and guiding principles and use these to make the decisions that govern how we run the settings, the organisation, the team and how we show up everyday.”
The session will start with an introduction to how Maz and Tomlin set up Hawthorn Learning and why they lead with an ethos-based approach. They will then share their reasoning behind their values and guiding principles.
This will lead onto an interactive activity exploring how organisational ethos can affect the working atmosphere.
Finally, they’ll cover the idea of ‘Clear is Kind’, and discuss how to approach any disconnect or differences in opinion.
At the end, you’ll have the opportunity to ask your own questions.

They are the founder of CalmFamily, which is a collaborative learning organisation that provides a cascade of education to parents and professionals with the aim of changing society through supporting calmer relationships with children.
